Review: As if Joseph Gordon-Levitt couldnt get any better. The former child star has turned into quite the up-and-coming young actor as hes worked to re-brand himself as something more than that kid from 3rd Rock From the Sun. Over the years, hes starred in such films as Brick, The Dark Knight Rises and Looper, and has proved to be the type of actor whom everyone loves - and who actually deserves that love. However, his most impressive performance to date might just be the one he gave behind the camera with Don Jon.The film marks Levitts first time writing and directing a feature- length film, and it makes one hell of an impression, especially because he tackles the lead role as well. Don Jon is one of those movies that has plenty of laughs and a few heartfelt moments, and its certainly entertaining. But it also touches on a few interesting social issues. I think Ill just go ahead and say it, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives away a few trade secrets, much to the horror of men everywhere: Don Jon touches on that dreadfully embarrassing fact that every guy is terrified will come out. What secret is that? Well, its probably best to put it in the words of the protagonist, Jon, himself: Every guy looks at porn, every day.Well, that last part might be a bit of an exaggeration, but Don Jon does bring up the point that pornography has become so readily available through the internet and even television that its just simply within arms reach at every single second of every single day, and every guy now and then reaches out to take a handful. However, society still treats it as something shameful and embarrassing, rather than a fact of life.Don Jon doesnt treat the use of pornography as something that should destroy relationships or cause significant others to fly off the handle in fits of jealousy. In fact, the movie seems to indicate, its a habit thats probably pretty healthy. That isnt to say that Jon has a healthy habit, as hes reduced to having to look at pornography constantly throughout the day, even after sex, but you know, thats an extreme example. Then again, maybe it isnt. Maybe the film offers a bit of a warning about how a little pornography is perfectly normal, but a lot can create a monster. Too much porn can make it so that its nearly impossible to connect with someone else on a meaningful level. After all, watching too much sex can create expectations that are as unrealistic as the ones the romantic comedies create. What really impressed me about Don Jon, though, are the performances that Levitt pulls out of his co-stars. Ive honestly never seen Scarlett Johansson give a better performance than she did as Jons trashy New Jersey girlfriend, Barbra. Shes absolutely despicable as she slowly begin to reveal her true intentions and tries to paint Jon as the bad guy when she discovers his addiction. On top of that, Tony Danza gives a side-splitting performance as Jons hot-headed father who gets into dick-measuring contest with his son every Sunday night (figurative, people, come on). However, the most impressive of them all is Levitt himself, who has repeatedly proved that he is one hell of an actor and one who has earned my trust as a moviegoer. The role is something so far from what I would have ever pictured him portraying, but he pulls it off beautifully as he plays the scumbag good-guy stereotype. Now for the hard part. I really enjoyed Don Jon. It strikes as a solid balance between art and entertainment, its filled with lots of laughs and it touches on a sensitive topic in a way that doesnt seem preachy. The ending is a little weak, but everything up until that is golden. However, Im not sure if its what one would call a date movie, since it will probably lead to inquisitive stares during a quiet car ride home afterward. And honestly, thats really too bad. For the people that are willing to embrace the fact that everyone looks at porn, this movie is well worth the price of admission. However, Im not sure if most of its value comes fr... |

Review: I mean seriously. This used to be a respected site that gave people who didnt know much films insight into the greatest films and audience ratings for every film theyve ever watched. 8.0. Dammit IMDb users. This film is categorized as comedy, so I pessimistically expected a few laughs. I got 4. Two were for slapstick comedy, one was at Ice Cubes death stare, and the final laugh I had was at the end credits (Not because they were funny, but because the entire audience was utterly silent at the forced humour). I wasnt alone, in the theatre it was mostly silent, as we googled the bloody IMDb page to check if it was a comedy. Small British audience Ill give you that, and pretty strange considering how everyone (Americans) laughed their ass of at this movie. The opening sequence chase had me in awe of how bad it was. Before you type an angry reply saying You just dont get the humour or It doesnt suit everybody. I understand. This is just my view, it may not be right, I may get proved wrong, but here is my case and the overwhelming evidence to prove why. The repetitive cinematography, the forced homoerotic jokes (as if the movie sends out a strong message on the subject), the pop-culture based soundtrack choices and the making fun of ourselves tries so hard to be clever it ruins the movie. Although these factors ruin the movie like a crooked candle ruins a pound-land birthday cake. I feel like I can envisage Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall (One of the screenplay writers) sitting down and saying stupid ideas and Jonah going Hah! That would be so funny! after every one. I like Jonah, he is a good actor, and Channing is trying so hard to impress I cant fault him for what his character is tasked to do. But here it comes, the problem that made me cringe, the audience look at each other and say Oh god, the one person in my theatre walk out (probably the reason), The Dialogue. Oh my goodness. How did this film make it past the producing companies with this damn dialogue. The film tries to make itself clever, it does little references that try and make it a film that is funny, but still smart. Like that budget gag, or the Gringo Pendejos. The prodigious awkwardness between Jonah (Im not going to say the character names due to the fact I lost 8 quid on this movie) and the bland bland bland spouse of his (we get it, Jonahs character isnt as good with girls as Channing, but due to his doughy lovable personality, he gets the girl! Wow!), had me contemplating walking out. The other girl, Jillain Bell brought a lot more, but not enough to make any noticeable difference. Channing Tatums bro language with his buddy, was just horrific. It was a train wreck. Something I imagine Americans found funny. Like the whole American college is a non-stop drug fuelled orgy theme that it embraced shamelessly. Oh, and the token drug trip that had such potential, but it was just terrific...ly painful to watch. This movie says in full view, Its the same as before! Oh wait, it isnt! Hah!, and I wouldnt mind. Thats right. I would not care. Its another film of the Project X genre, of America high-fiving itself. But its just another right? Well thats what I thought, but then I see so many people saying how damn amazing it is, I saw a thread (highly sophisticated reviewing and analysing may I add) that went like this, They (*Probably the two main characters who are liked so much people cant see them do wrong) were awesome! *spoiler* when I saw seth rogen I DIED! and when Jonah Hill was acting like nothing changed! lol! Seeing Seth Rogen isnt funny. I like his movies, but he didnt do anything funny. Its immature humour that is carelessly littered and licked up by Americans (sorry for repeating myself, but who else could like this so much to give it an 8.0?) If someone thinks differently, please give me your best shot. Because it is an insult to rate this film so highly if I am really seeing it as it is. Did I miss the humour? Was Jonah Hill doing a Mexican accent funny? W... |

Review: Just got back from the 7pm showing. More than 30 people in the theater. Had three theaters showing it in the Twin Cities Minneapolis/St Paul Minnesota.I have to say this third and final installment was the best of the three in terms of capturing the philosophical essence of the novel. They used narration to good effect, and used the device I think is the most effective ... having philosophical discussions amongst themselves rather than some contrived debate or speech. Though John Galts radio speech came off well condensed, capturing the spirit of the three hour version. My only nit in casting was that I thought Joaquim de Almeida was quite a bit too old for the part. He looked more like Dagnys grandfather than her childhood boyfriend. My favorite DAnconia was Jsu Garcia of part I. He had the young playboy look. |

Review: I am so glad I didnt have to pay to see this movie and I had a gift card instead. This movie was terrible to say the least. I had very high expectations for this movie because I was such a huge fan of the first Anchorman. It seemed like the entire movie was just made up on the spot and filmed and there was no rehearsing at all. Im sure for a lot of people this was a highly anticipated movie and instead it was absolute crap. I have advised all of my friends to save their money for a better movie and rent it when it comes out if you must watch it. I definitely will not be buying this movie when it comes out. Very disappointed. Just do yourself a favor and go see Wolf of Wallstreet or something else. Worst Will Ferrell movie in a LONG time. |

Review: Great opening at the Venice Film Festival with this must-see movie. The story of an actor persecuted by the role that made him popular, Birdman, and pressured by the willing of proving himself on stage with his new play. The characters in the story are all struggling with something: Sam (Emma Stone) with her drug addiction, Mike (Edward Norton) with his sexual problems, Lesley (Naomi Watts) with her self- realization and Michael Keaton with love. What kind of love is he lacking? Is it admiration for his work? The same admiration that chained him to Bridman, who is probably the only one capable of saving him.The cinematography reminds of that used in Hitchcocks Rope: it seems to be filmed consequently. The originality of the cinematography, though, may have sacrificed the storyline.Birdman certainly needs to be seen more than one, but likewise certainly its going to be one of the greatest movies of the year |

Review: Laika has been well known of their artistic talent to bring back the old-time style of making an animation by creating different emotions of the characters through small figurines and hand movements in a designed board, but unfortunately and surprisingly that the concept and screenplay for this third repeating effort seems to be a little bit underwhelming. While ParaNorman looks much more fun, interesting and appealing to general audiences, though boxtrolls themselves are adorable enough to attract the kids, they are dull and the slow progressing of the first half of the film might bored the parents. However, the strong casts who voice all the characters in the film especially Ben Kingsley as the villain though looks hilarious, but great enough to make the second half the film, at least to look more attracting, bringing on an inspiring message to remind audiences to be the real of yourself. |

Review: Were the Millers is going to make you laugh. The movie is more hilarious than you would think. You will be surprise how creative some of those stupid, funny and ridiculous scenes are. The girls are doing a great job. Emma Roberts as an angry teen with a big mouth and Jennifer Aniston as a sexy stripper with mother instincts. Loved the stripper scenes with Jennifer who looks as hot as ever. Kenny (Will Poulter)is just so perfect for the part of virgin, sweet teenage guy and of course Jason Sudeikis as David - the drug dealer - is the one and only who can pull that character as good as he did. The Millers are just the perfect family. They picked just the right people for this comedy. You can expect dirty, funny, sexy, ridiculous! Just go and see it so you can have a good summer laugh! |

Review: As good as the Shining was something I said to all around me as soon as the picture ended. Brilliantly conceived and executed. Fast paced action + beautifully shot + not too gory + a cast of characters you really cared about all combined to make this the best experience of jumping and screaming and laughing Ive seen from a bunch of experienced horror show aficionados I have ever seen. Good performances from all including the kids. Very unpredictable and wholly inventive storyline. Even the cleverest plots and safeguards will not defeat the pure evil of the Oculus.Very good effort from some brilliant and talented people. |

Review: For the most part, you will come out seeing this film with what you expect. The Book Thief takes place during the Holocaust, a subject seen in many other renowned films, but the beauty of this story comes from the perspective viewers get - that of a childs. There is an excellent blend of different pieces that move the film along well - the violence and the intensity of the time period, the touching relationships between friends and family, and the humor they all share. Though its nothing new, the writing and lines are still great and make the characters very likable. Performances by the entire cast, no matter how small or large a role they play, are certainly deserving of praise. Even with all the dramatic events surrounding them, it is easy to get caught in the relationship between Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson as the familiar nagging parents of Liesel. The various sets of the film - backed up with some clean, beautiful cinematography (yet nothing too astounding) - show several different parts of the town, but you are still left wanting to see more of this world. Which is where the film falls in general. For the majority of the movie, you are invested into these characters and you follow their time through WWII, and much goes on. The ending, however, comes rather quickly and you are left with that same feeling of wanting to know more. Not just of the ending, but everything before. It seems every time a moment - of suspense, of sadness, or happiness - comes, it holds on for a short while, but cuts off before you can fully take it in.Still, the film gives a touching story to watch. The subject matter is obviously very serious, but the story of The Book Thief allows a wide range of people to watch this and understand, be it a young child or an adult. The characters are the best part of this film and I found them very enjoyable. The film is rather traditional and almost doesnt fit in with the rest of todays movies, but rather reminded me of many other older classics. |
