Review: This movie, simply put, is worth each and every one of its 125 minutes. Including the closing credits, that you need to dry your eyes and think about what you just saw. Its the inspiring story of two young people who are no different then all of us, as they both are in the process of dieing. Though Hazel Grace and Augustus are more aware of this fact of life; because their „eternity has an expiration date, set by Hazels terminal illness: Cancer. As the viewer is put on an emotional roller-coaster, alongside the feelings and attitudes towards life and love the two teens share, this movie will be a key to many locked doors in the recepients minds. And through these doors we are lead by an ensemble of actors who are amazingly sensitive in their portrayal of personalities and emotions.The writing and directing is so brilliantly executed, that you have sympathy with every character this movie so caringly brings to (short) life. Even when they oppose another you feel unable to take sides. Because you find yourself sharing both. And when the credits role - like the tears on your cheek - you realize, that these opposing views are one and the same after all: Life.

Review: We got to get over this hump.Very Good Girls was on my radar ever since I heard it was debuting in last years Sundance Film Festival. The reason I was attracted towards this despite not knowing anything about the plot was the cast. It starred Elizabeth Olsen who Ive been a fan of ever since Martha Marcy May Marlene and Dakota Fanning who I think hasnt matched that same potential she had as a child actress. The supporting cast included Demi Moore, Peter Sarsgaard, Clark Gregg, and Richard Dreyfuss so I was really looking forward to what they could do. This was also the feature film debut from director Naomi Foner who had written a couple of screenplays in the past, but is best known for being the mother of the talented actors, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. You would never guess this screenplay was written by a woman considering these young teenage girls have no personality and their entire lives seem to revolve around this guy they met at a beach. He is the only thing they talk about and both girls end up falling for him, which is pretty much the basic theme of this film as their friendship is tested by their personal feelings towards him. Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen play these young girls who want to lose their virginity before going to college. The guy they both fall for is played by Boyd Holbrook and I really wasnt a huge fan of his performance. I couldnt see why these girls would fall for him as he lacked personality and wasnt really charming either. Both Fanning and Olsen come from very different families. Olsens parents are played by Richard Dreyfuss and Demi Moore who are very talkative and liberal, while Fannings parents are played by Clark Gregg and Ellen Barkin and they are much more reserved. The parents dont get much screen time so they werent really developed very well and all the information we gather from them is through the conversations the two girls have about how they view them (which is almost entirely negative). So that was a big let down for me because I was interested in what these actors could bring to the drama. There is nothing really that engages the audience since none of the characters have any personality whatsoever and not even the love triangle seems too appealing due to the lack of romantic chemistry. The film is only 90 minutes long but it seemed to drag forever and the score didnt help out either. I was hugely disappointed by Very Good Girls and I understand now why it took so long to reach a wider audience after the Festival. Unfortunately the talented cast is wasted in this film and not even my appreciation for Elizabeth Olsen engaged me. I didnt even like her character very much here and much less the rest of the cast. Olsen has to find better roles because her latest films havent exploded her potential very well. I was amazed to see how little Demi Moore and Richard Dreyfuss were used in this film; there could have been a better movie somewhere if they were given more importance. The lack of personality from any character just makes this film even more boring and tedious. There have been so many good coming of age films over the past year that this film simply fails to reach the bar that was set so high by Kings of Summer, The Way Way Back, and The Spectacular Now. This could have been an opportunity for two strong female leads but they simply didnt have much to work with.

Review: One of these days Step Up will realize that its better for the characters to just whimsically dance like in old musical movie without forcing an already stagnant plot. The movie boasts a dynamic choreography and stellar music to go with it, some are timed just right and they are admittedly entertaining. It commendably tries to bring a dancers perspective on their life style and tribulation, but the plot often contradicts the effort by putting overly flamboyant characters or tired plot. In the end its just another drawn out excuse for a dance battle, albeit a rather spectacular one.Story revolves around characters from previous installments, collaborating to make a crew to win the high stake dance competition. No Channing Tatum though. If this sounds familiar, it is. There are monetary issues, personal issues and dances in between. For what its worth, the two leads try to bring more emotion to the mix, although only a few good moments come out of it. Adam Sevani (Moose) is a star, the uncrowned lead of the series. Its quiet amazing that his side story resonates more than the actual main plot.Problem arises when the movie attempts to exaggerate flamboyant lifestyle, especially those of celebritys and their reality television. Its far from witty; in fact the humor tends to fall and becomes tiresome to watch. The main antagonists are mediocre unsavory characters; the male is copied directly from the typical random thug that messes with Chuck Norris or Steven Seagal at a bar, while the female is a botched version of Stanley Tuccis character from Hunger Games.When the characters dont banter they perform well. Using odd props and good dance moves, they manage to produce a spectacle. Most of the cast are primarily dancers, so they convince the audience better using motion than poorly written script. Wardrobe looks good, each dance is represented with unique costume, the steampunk one is particularly exceptional. With simple yet effective effect, these dance sequences are the heights of the movie.Like any other installments, the plot is almost a hindrance as audience waits for another dance scene to erupt. It does try to make audience relate, although it misses the mark more often than not, which is a shame since it invests plenty of time for it. The glossy choreograph and heart-thumping soundtracks present an enjoyable light flick, and to be fair its what viewer would expect, but sadly nothing more.

Review: Unfortunately the marketing for this film is subpar and misleading, as it was for the first one. My best advice to you is ***AVOID THE TRAILERS AT ALL COSTS. They include major spoilers to some very emotional points in the film. This is another level of animated film, one that gracefully crosses generational gaps and will speak volumes to any age group. Because of the critical and audience acclaim of the beloved predecessor, many are afraid that a sequel will not match the mastery of the first one, that this would be created purely as a money-making gimmick, like many Hollywood sequels. If these are your presumptions, you couldnt be more wrong. This film is worthy of all the hopes and expectations you are afraid to carry into the theater. DeBlois has told us a moving story, one that wont be soon forgotten, that so many of us will connect with. At Comic Con 2013, DeBlois said that this was The Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. That is a hefty promise, which he has successfully delivered.The world of HTTYD2 has been vastly expanded and explored, very little of the film takes place on Berk. It is much more of an adventure film. The film has taken everything from HTTYD to the next level: emotion, intensity, action, adventure, humor, and depth. It takes risks I have seen so few animated films take, full of twists and turns, that will keep you engaged and invested.For me the film could have had a stronger beginning, a few less childish jokes, and a bit slower pacing (probably should have been about 10 minutes longer). Other than some very nit-picky notes, that is literally the worst that I can say about it.HTTYD2 is a phenomenal film and will deservedly pick up the academy award for best animated film of the year. John Powell, will again be nominated (and hopefully win) for his inventively emotional score.This was my most anticipated film of the past two years and it does not disappoint. The four years of work on it show, as it is a polished film. It is one of those rare films that inspires. And one of the few that you walk out of the theater feeling so much emotion and thinking Gosh, I cant wait to see that again.

Review: After a misleading Trailer I gave this Comedy a chance. To be honest this is the worst movie I have ever seen. You can only laugh about the jokes if you still have the humor of a 14 year old who is just reaching puberty. Seriously. Review: I was lucky enough to attend a special screening of The Raid 2 in Sydney last night, it was a big crowd for a small event with everyone excited for the film to begin. I can honestly say that myself, my friend who tagged along and the audience were very very entertained!The plot continues 2 hours after the events of the first film, it places our hero into another intense mission to stop the baddies by going undercover for a special unit and blending in with the mob whos on the verge of war with their rivals. All I can say that follows is a orgy of brutal, bloody and intense arm-breaking, leg-snapping, hammer stomping, bat swinging, blade slashing, head blowing, bullet-loaded and arse kicking violence in a dash of Tarantino and Scorsese story-telling in its plot. The choreographed fights are all intense and realistic with the climatic showdown towards the last half hour of the film being the best sequences filmed on camera.Overall, its a bloody amazing film to be released in 2014 and its a definite return for the genre too! Im definitely keen to see this again when its out officially later this week!

Review: The Lego Movie is a winner on several levels. There is a good amount of clever gags and I was constantly bursting with laughter. I was surprised by how it contained so many memorable cameos, pop icons and film references, providing a strong nostalgia factor to older viewers. The playful approach towards movie clichés made it a really enjoyable and refreshing watch. The animation is absolutely stunning and the blend of CGI with stop motion worked brilliantly. Everything can be attachable, making the vibe of each scenario feel very unique and unlike anything youve ever seen. The Lego Movie has plenty of heart too by the end of the journey and its going to be really tough for another animated film to surpass its inventiveness and charm.

Review: I am utterly appalled by how horrendous this movie is. I honestly cannot wrap my mind around how this thing got made (or at least got released in this condition). The movie starts with a plot line that you couldnt care less about. Remember Peters parents from the first movie? No, well thats because no one cared about them. Thankfully we get to see even more of their completely intriguing back story here... just kidding. It sucks a lot. The opening scenes involving them are plagued with horrible acting, choppy editing, poor directing, and bad, clichéd dialog. In fact, this trend continues through a lot of the movie.Scenes involving Paul Giamatti and his horrible Russian accent are laughable. He seems to have just stepped out of a cartoon. I know this is a comic book movie, but even in the fun world they are trying to create this just doesnt fit. I see what they wanted to do but this scene is just so poorly done. Spider-Man is just not that funny, and again it seems to be choppily edited and poorly written. Even Gwens decent speech(which way too obviously foreshadows her death) is ruined by putting stupid action sequences over it.A similar scenario comes up with Jamie Foxxs Max Dillon. He seems to be confused about what movie he is in. Imagine if you multiplied Jim Carreys Riddler from Batman Forever ten-fold. That is Foxxs character here. The performance and dialog is truly cringe-worthy, and he has absolutely no motivation for anything he does other than the fact that hes crazy and loves Spider-Man (that is until he forgets his name). The Osborn family is just as bad. As Norman dies, he tells his son Harry (who we are somehow supposed to give a crap about) that he has the same disease. The whole scene is pretty bad and although they try to explain away why they spend their last moments together fighting and why they make a teenager the head of a company, that doesnt make it better. By the time Harry and Electro decide to work together (shocker…), the movie really just becomes so horribly awful it is beyond repair. Almost every scene becomes just so laughable and the ones that arent have a completely different tone. Its like five different people directed the movie. It has no idea if it wants to be serious or not. Then, with only thirty minutes left of the movie, we get this whole scene that seems to only exist to set up a Sinister Six spin-off and make Harry the Green Goblin just so he can kill Gwen and leave room for a new leading actress in a sequel. Electro and Green Goblin are then both easily defeated (and put to the side immediately afterward), and although they try to show that Peter doesnt want to fight Harry it doesnt really work because we only just became aware of their relationship. There are a couple funny lines here and there, but everything is just so uninteresting. Harrys search for a cure is boring because he is essentially a stranger and no one even seems interested in it (especially Dane DeHaan), everything involving Electro is frustrating to watch, all of Aunt Mays scenes are poor because Sally Field seems to just be phoning it in, and even Peter and Gwens relationship begins to become boring and repetitive. Everything in the movie exists only to move the plot along. And at times it seems its not even trying to move this movies plot forward but instead step up sequels and spin-offs. Everything in the movies plot is connected but not because its a smart film, but because it is relying on coincidence. I honestly cant explain how bad many of these scenes are. Throughout it, you keep asking... Was that really the best take? Were those really the best lines you could have possibly written? Was any of this even scripted? Like did you intend to make a film or did it just kind of happen accidentally and you figured hey just stitch all this random crap together and add in some CGI...It will be fine? Review: Im an avid horror fan. Lately Ive been thinking there isnt much that can scare me (though Sinister got under my skin). I appreciate James Wans films, I love the first Saw, Insidious was a damn good modern ghost story, but like all reviews have stated for it, the movie kinda loses its momentum in the final act.The Conjuring is better, scarier, and more tense than Insidious. Im gonna go out on a limb and say its one of the best horror movies of the last 5 or 10 years. It goes back to the classic rule of horror film making, never show the bad guy fully to your audience. Plus this movie knows suspense, I tell you, I almost threw a water bottle at the screen from sheer terror once the scare finally happened. There are no fake jump scares, the movie earned an R rating without any blood, sex, or profanity, its all from the terror that this movie builds upon.Not only is the movie scary, but as a film itself, its almost a masterpiece. The script, acting, direction, style, tone, etc were all simply top notch. Wans camera-work here is by far his best out of any of his movies. The choice to set the movie in the 70s was a stroke of genius as it feels so authentic and all the more real. If this story were set in the present, it simply wouldnt be as a effective or scary. The 70s style film making, costuming, and hair styling are a great throwback to likes of The Exorcist & The Amityville Horror.Though there are a few (extremely minor) flaws, such are length, repetitiveness, and a resolution that happens way too fast. I dont care, every horror movie (or movie in general) has its flaws. There will never be a perfect horror movie, if there is one, I havent seen it yet. But all I know is James Wans The Conjuring is one of the best horror movies Ive seen in a long time, and its been a really long time that a movie has scared me this badly.10/10 Dont miss this one, its an amazing theater viewing experience.
