Review: Directors making their feature film debuts dont typically have their pick of Hollywood's finest (and busiest) Stars - unless they're Akiva Goldsman, that is. For his amazing romance epic Tale Winter is the Oscar-winning screenwriter corralled the likes of Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Colin Farrell and Eva Marie Saint: cast talent to do a lot more experienced instructor jealous. The problem is that Winter Tale has never really comes together as Goldsman want clear: the writing is smart and sometimes very good, but the movie flounders when it should soar, losing more than speed and excitement, as you go on.The story - based on a 1983 novel heavy Helprins Mark - following petty thief Peter Lake (Farrell) from the early 1900s until today. In 1916 Peter will suddenly declared persona non grata by Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), frankly insane, literally demonic Irish thug his mentor. While on escape, Peter meets a mysterious white horse, pointing him in the direction of Penn Mansion. Initially looking to steal something nice, Peter aside all thoughts of Penn theft charge when he meets and quickly falls in love with Beverly (monasteries DOWNTON Jessica Brown Findlay), the beautiful, red-haired mistress of the house slowly being eaten alive by consumption. Its all very romantic, or so I was told supernatural element in the love story unfolded: Pearly become convinced that Peter is destined to save a girl with Titian hair, teetering balance action interferes between good and evil. In fact, ends burning love Peter to keep him alive for more than a century, until he meets a single mother / super-journalist Virginia (Jennifer Connelly) and her daughter in modern Manhattan. It quickly becomes clear that fate, destiny and a whole lot of mystical mumbo-jumbo is working here, and Peter will soon discover the healing and restorative powers of love itself. To be fair, based on Winter Tale collection of very interesting ideas. This suggests that instead belabours, the concept of good physical shape and wrong to take: Pearly lurking through Manhattan, gangster commercial and demonstration by nature. When he decides to confront Peter for good and forever, he's forced to fight on only earthly terms. Its fantasy universe absolutely begging to be extended, fiction can be real and is the most tempting for it.But Goldsman in juggling the various elements of his story, let the opportunity slip him, instead of focusing on the love story in almost excruciating detail - even if he never really creates a connection between Peter and Beverly that rings true. Peter learns Beverly escaping her all-consuming fever reducing her heart set, Peter Beverly explains how she thinks people will rise to the stars to find their loved ones when they die - all its intensely romantic but not very emotional. The film then throws a few more tropes and complications in the mix (Peter loses his mind, Peter ends up traveling through future into our present, love will conquer all, etc.), without really stopping to explain how it all Hae, hangs together . Goldsman is less pulled together a cast worth watching even when the HES film built around them is not quite worth their salt. Farrell beehive haircut beautifully in his boy band clearly too old for the part, but nevertheless play with great gusto. Payment Goldsman back to A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man, Crowe marching through the stupidity of his furious screwball character strange amounts of joy. Pearly is easily the best character films, unless you count second of Facebook friends Goldman play (no spoilers, but this movie star no doubt grateful to Goldman for a script that earned him buckets of creditors acting many years ago). Swimming somewhere in the piles of pretty nice videos collected by Goldsman and his cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, a ... |
